Being able to have real-life conversations is the top goal for language learners. Speaking practice is an extremely valuable way to prepare for everyday conversations and build confidence. No matter where you live, there are lots of ways to practise and strengthen your speaking skills.

Practise with a speech recognition tool

Getting immediate feedback on your pronunciation is a helpful and efficient way to practice multiple skills at once. Babbel’s speech recognition tool is a core part of both our courses and our review feature, so speaking practice is easy on all your devices.

Read out loud

Reading out loud is a good way to work on multiple skills at the same time. Read the news, a short story, or lines from a play to yourself. It might seem strange at first, but it’s a great way to get in the habit of speaking and to practise commonly used words and phrases.

Watch movies or TV

Watching movies or TV shows in your target language is a fun way to combine relaxation with language practice. Turn on captions and find a few short scenes you can practise. Watch the scene, then rewind and read the captions out loud. Repeat a few more times and focus on the rhythm and pronunciation of the dialogue.

Find a tandem partner

Having a conversation and talking about everyday things is the perfect way to make learning a language relevant to your life. Your speaking partner doesn’t have to be fluent — practising with a friend, family member, or someone in your community who is also learning the language is a comfortable, convenient way to work on speaking skills.
