We know that ease of use is important for our learners, so we’ve made sure to have our speech integration be as seamless as possible. When you first start a lesson on any device, you’ll be asked whether or not you want to use speech recognition. Here’s how to make sure you’ve set up your microphone correctly.
Desktop
To use Babbel's speech recognition, we generally recommend Chrome. If you are using Edge, Firefox or Safari, speech recognition is only available for learning languages German, Italian, Spanish and French.
- Start a lesson of your choosing
- When you reach a part that has speech recognition, you will first hear the word or sentence. Now it's your turn! Click the orange microphone symbol and speak. If your browser asks for your permission to allow Babbel access to your microphone, click Allow.
Please note: if you don't allow Babbel to use the microphone, but later change your mind, you have to go into your browser's settings and remove the block. How to do this varies between browsers. In Chrome, Firefox and Edge, you can search for "Microphone" in Settings. In Safari, microphone permissions can be found under Settings > Websites.
Don't want to use speech recognition right now? You can easily toggle speech recognition on and off with the microphone icon at the bottom-left corner.
